When Relationships Become a Source of Pain

Image by Priscilla Du Preez 🇨🇦

Relationships are central to how we experience our lives. When they are going well, they can sustain us through almost anything. When they are difficult, the effects ripple into everything: how we sleep, how we work, how we feel about ourselves, and how we move through the world.

Relationship difficulties come in many forms. It might be a long-term partnership that has lost its way. A family dynamic that has always been complicated and is now causing you real distress. A friendship that has broken down and left you questioning your own judgment. A working relationship that has made you dread going in. Or a pattern you keep finding yourself in, with different people, that you cannot seem to break.

Whatever the relationship and whatever the difficulty, individual therapy offers a space to look at what is happening clearly, without judgement, and to begin understanding your part in it more fully.

Please note: the therapy at Wellness Psychology is offered to individuals. Jo does not offer couples counselling or joint sessions.

Recognising the Signs

Relationship difficulties are not always easy to name. Sometimes there is a specific situation that has brought things to a head; other times it is a gradual sense that something is not right in one or more of your relationships. You might benefit from support if you are experiencing:

Feeling stuck in the same arguments or patterns
Struggling with conflict or confrontation
Difficulty trusting others, or trusting your own judgment
Difficulty setting or maintaining boundaries
Feeling disconnected from people who matter to you
A sense that you consistently give more than you receive
Feeling unseen, unheard or undervalued

Going through a relationship breakdown or separation

Uncertainty about a significant relationship in your life

If your relationships are causing you distress, you do not have to work through it alone.

How We Can Work Together

Relationship difficulties rarely exist in isolation. They are shaped by our history, our attachment patterns, the expectations we carry, and the ways we have learned to relate to others over time. Individual therapy offers a space to explore all of that, without the pressure of doing so in front of the other person. Working on your own experience of a relationship can bring genuine clarity: about what you need, what is and is not working, where certain patterns come from, and what, if anything, you want to do differently. The aim is not to tell you what to do. It is to help you understand yourself and your relationships more fully, so that the choices you make are genuinely yours.

Step 1
Book your free consultation:
Reach out via the contact page with a brief message about what you are looking for.

Jo will arrange a free 15-minute consulation call at a time that suits you. It is a relaxed, no-obligation conversation, and the best way to find out whether working together feels right.
Step 2
Your first session
If you decide to go ahead, your first session is focused on understanding your experience and beginning to build a picture of what the work might look like. Nothing is rushed, and you are in control of the pace throughout.
Step 3
Begin your therapy

Sessions build on each other over time. Jo will work with you to understand what is driving your depression and find the approaches that genuinely help. You will always be involved in decisions about your care.

Other Areas I Can Help With

Relationship difficulties often connect with other areas of wellbeing. If low mood, anxiety or past trauma are also part of the picture, support is available for those too.

Flexible online therapy sessions for clients across the UK, with the same quality of care from wherever you are.

If you are living with depression or persistent low mood, online therapy offers a confidential and consistent space to begin working through it, in your own time and at your own pace.

Grief is deeply personal. Online bereavement counselling gives you access to sensitive, unhurried support from wherever you feel most comfortable, without the pressure of having to be anywhere.

The Flash Technique is well suited to online delivery. If you are looking for specialist trauma therapy and cannot access it locally, online sessions make it possible to work with a trained specialist regardless of where you are based.

Anxiety and chronic stress can make it difficult to leave the house, travel, or sit in a waiting room. Online therapy removes those barriers entirely, so that getting support does not have to feel like another source of pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions About Relationship Difficulties Counselling

Do you offer couples counselling?

No. The therapy at Wellness Psychology is offered to individuals only. Jo works with people experiencing difficulties in their relationships, but all sessions are one-to-one. The other person in the relationship is not involved and does not attend sessions.

What kinds of relationships can therapy help with?

Individual therapy can be helpful for difficulties in any significant relationship, including romantic partnerships, marriages, family relationships, friendships, and working relationships. You do not need to be in a couple or experiencing a specific type of relationship difficulty to benefit from support.

Do I need to involve the other person in any way?

No. Sessions are entirely between you and Jo. You will not be asked to bring anyone else in, share anything with the other person, or take a particular approach to the relationship outside of sessions. The work is focused on your experience, your patterns and your wellbeing.

Can therapy help if the relationship has already ended?

Yes. Many clients seek support following a separation, bereavement, or breakdown of a significant relationship. Therapy can be valuable both for processing the loss and for understanding the patterns that shaped the relationship, which can be useful for future relationships as well as for your own sense of self.

I keep ending up in the same kinds of difficult relationships. Can therapy help with that?

This is one of the things individual therapy is particularly well suited to. Patterns in our relationships are often rooted in earlier experiences, including our earliest attachments. Exploring those patterns in a safe and supported space can bring real insight, and with insight comes the possibility of change.

Do I need a GP referral to book?

No. You can contact Wellness Psychology directly, without a referral from your GP or any other professional. Simply get in touch via the contact page to arrange your free initial consultation call.

Ready to Take the First Step?

Understanding yourself in your relationships, and finding a way through what is difficult, takes courage. Jo's free 15-minute consultation call is a low-pressure, no-obligation first step. There is nothing to prepare beforehand and no commitment required.

Please note: Wellness Psychology operates a strict clinical screening process. All new clients must complete a brief initial telephone consultation prior to booking. We do not offer emergency or immediate crisis intervention.
